Complete Cannabis Legalization May Come at a Cost
If only public voting is considered, the rest of the states could follow the suites of Colorado and Washington State in decriminalizing recreational and medicinal cannabis legalization. As per the CBS poll, 51% of citizens supported cannabis legalization in full fledge. Gallup poll that works similar to CBS claims that 58% of Americans are supporting usage of weed for recreational activities. Prium account executive, Scott E. Yasko stated that it’s the right time to take some action; this issue can’t be pushed further. Yasko who works for a medical intervention firm said it during a meeting at National Rx Drug Abuse Summit.
The policy leaders, public health executives, and drug addiction officials are already in talks about the issue and are contacted again for further discussion. Tom Pasternak, Fall River pharma cist attended the meeting and said cannabis legalization has some medical benefits, but it comes with the cost. Pasternak said marijuana might help now, but in the longer run, it leaves some adverse affect on the society. “We don’t need more people under the influence of chemicals” Pasternak said.
Cannabis was used as medication to relieve stress and chronic pain until twentieth century, when aspirin made its entry into the medical world. League of Nations demanded that cannabis should be banned and the United States formed act in 1937 to criminalize cannabis. Apart from recreational activity, it helps patients to manage pain; however, it isn’t approved by Fed government yet, as it still sees the substance to be of high addiction and no medicinal use.
Despite Washington and Colorado laws, the Fed Act still categorizes cannabis as illegal drug and is crime to use, sell, or buy even in states, which let recreational or medicinal pot. Washington has approved recreational cannabis legalization and as per the last ballot result, legalized medical cannabis in Massachusetts and dispensaries, which will sell and produce cannabis.
Rachel Brozina, a lawyer from Arizona stated that cannabis legalization would somehow affect employment law as well. There lies a question mark whether or not companies fire employees for smoking marijuana, though it’s legal in the area. Police and lawmakers will have hard time monitoring people, who drive vehicles after consuming cannabis. Whether the impaired driving laws will be different is still to be figured.
It has also been observed that youngsters are being exposed to cannabis in states, which have cannabis legalization marijuana. This cannabis legalization offers many challenges to government and officials and healthcare segment. Fed has to take some actions to address the problem, and even going by the positive effects of cannabis legalization on state revenues, lot of other states are going to consider the proposition very seriously.
